Biofuels from Forest Biomass: A Biodiversity Impact Assessment
Short Introductive summary
Sustainable biofeedstocks availability and its impact on biodiversity, the protection and recovery of which is one of the main pillars of the European Green Deal have been raised by different stakeholders as a justification for minimising the role of biofuels in the decarbonisation of the transport sector. According to the study of Concawe and Imperial College on biomass availability, forest biomass is important as it makes up 40-45% of the total potential for bioenergy in 2050. Therefore, Concawe is interested in understanding the biodiversity impact of producing biofuels from forest residues across Europe and has engaged with AFRY Management Consulting (‘AFRY’) to complete the assessment. Concawe aims to present the results of this project at the EUBCE conference in order to raise the awareness of the environmental aspects of mobilising forest biomass for biofuels in Europe.
