Oxyfuel Combustion of Biogenic Low Calorific Value Gases - Influence of Water Injection on Combustion Characteristics and Exhaust Gas Composition

Short Introductive summary

Oxyfuel combustion describes the oxidation of a fuel with pure oxygen instead of air. This has the advantage that CO2 can be separated from the exhaust gas comparatively easily by cooling it to below the dew point. In the case of the oxyfuel combustion chamber at Fraunhofer UMSICHT, the temperature is regulated by injecting liquid water. The aim of this work is to point out how the injection of liquid water affects the combustion characteristics and exhaust gas quality during oxyfuel combustion of biogenic, low calorific value gases for CCU or CCS. For this purpose, the combustion process in the oxyfuel combustion chamber set up at Fraunhofer UMSICHT was modelled using the CFD software ANSYS Fluent. The results suggest that water injection is not detrimental to the combustion process regarding the CO2 quality in the exhaust gas. As the plant is about to be commissioned, experimental results to validate the simulations are expected in the foreseeable future and will be presented if available.
