A Novel Design of a Continuous Reactor for Fast Hydrothermal Liquefaction

Short Introductive summary

Fast hydrothermal liquefaction (fast HTL) is an effective non-isothermal process for turning wet biomass into biocrude oil. Compared to the traditional isothermal HTL offers a higher biocrude yield and energy efficiency. Fast HTL is characterized by high heating rates (54 to 585 °C/min) with a short residence time, making the slurry reach 350 °C at 250 bar. The objectives of the present study are to investigate fast HTL processes, improve oil yield, and address operational challenges by upgrading a continuous HTL pilot at the Free University of Bolzano. To facilitate mass balance calculations, the modified design substitutes the filter and back pressure regulator with hydraulic pistons. A high-pressure metering pump is part of the setup, which allows for accurate feedstock injection. The study intends also to assess the effects of various heating rates on oil yield. The system includes a 2-kW induction heater for quick heating. Understanding the conversion of biomass will be aided by comparing the thermal behavior of the new heating system with the old one using heat transfer modeling.
