Screening of Glycerol-utilized Anaerobic Bacteria for Biobutanol Production

Short Introductive summary

Biodiesel has been produced from transesterification reaction of various lipids and alcohols with numerous catalysts . One of the main by-products is glycerol. Biodiesel production trend and consumption have been increasing constantly and glycerol would be followed. Butanol has been used as precursors and solvent in different industries and has a prospective to utilize as biofuel due to its similar fuel properties with gasoline. Butanol could be renewable bioenergy since it could be produced from bacterium with renewable resources. However, a few strains of Clostridium sp., main butanol producers, could utilize glycerol as a whole carbon source and hardly convert to butanol. Therefore, this study has been focused on screening of anaerobic bacteria which utilized glycerol for butanol production.
