Assessment of the Environmental Impact of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel FT-SPK via Gasification of Biogenic Residues
Short Introductive summary
The Fischer-Tropsch pathway is promising regarding CO2 emissions reduction as well as feedstock flexibility. Although gasification of biogenic residues is not yet commercial, assessing its potential ecological impacts is crucial before driving broad implementation of this technology. The 1 MW pilot gasifier of BEST - Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH is the first of its kind in the world to demonstrate this technology in a single, industry-oriented and continuous process chain. Therefore, it delivers a unique data basis for such an assessment. Thus, the project AssessSAF aims for assessing the environmental impact of the FT-pathway in pilot-scale, as well as industrial-scale based on real data. In a first step, the environmental impact of dual fluidized bed steam gasification of different biogenic residues, such as bark or municipal sewage sludge, will be assessed using the methodology of life cycle assessment.
