Critical Review on the BECCS Development and Potential

Short Introductive summary

BECCS combines bioenergy and carbon capture, showing promise in actively reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide. To assess BECCS developments, a systematic literature review has been conducted, scrutinizing existing studies, reports, and scientific literature, evaluating technical aspects. The review involved title and abstract screening, identifying BECCS-focused articles describing power plants. These plants were compared based on energy performances, using electric and thermal efficiencies but also the Specific Primary Energy Consumption for CO2 avoided (SPECCA) index, modified to include cogeneration configurations, as well as possible additional energy inputs. Results present varying SPECCA values among technologies: calcium looping and solvent-based captures have the highest values, while molten sorbents and chemical looping have lower ones. Molten carbonate fuel cells even demonstrated negative SPECCA due to increased electrical output of the power plant.
