Reducing Wastewater Production While Enhancing Biocrude Yields from Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) of Municipal Sewage Sludge - Can Recirculation of Aqueous Phase Solve One of the Key Challenges...

Short Introductive summary

Municipal Sewage Sludge (MSS) is an unavoidable residue resulting from biological processing of municipal wastewater. Currently, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is intensively researched and developed in various parts of the world as an attractive and promising technology for converting MSS into liquid products (biocrude). However, because in HTL water is used as the reaction environment, the problem of wastewater needs to be resolved before its application on a commercial scale. Recycling of the wastewater back to the HTL process is one of the options considered for its efficient management. In this study the impact of sequential recycling the wastewater in hydrothermal liquefaction of MSS was investigated. The study demonstrated that HTL of sewage sludge could benefit from recycling the organic fraction contained in the aqueous phase, addressing both environmental and economic issues.
