Gasification of Municipal Solid Waste in Brazil

Short Introductive summary

The anthropic activity contributing to accelerated development contributes to the increase in energy demand and waste generation. The amount of energy required for all human activities goes beyond the capacity of this degraded environment. Brazil is a large country, with 203 million inhabitants and 5,570 municipalities. Of these, 88% have a population of less than or equal to 50,000 inhabitants. In 2022, 81.8 million tons of MSW were generated, approximately 224 thousand tons per day. Aligned with six of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy, the choice of technology must consider the environmental safety it provides and the economic-financial viability of the project. The regulatory instruments for Distributed Generation will also be addressed since they observe particularities and benefits in Brazilian regulatory legislation. Besides that, an adequate use of MSW contributes to the Circular Economy in such municipalities. This paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility of WtE Gasification technology application in two projects that are in the implementation phase in Brazil, with 2 MWe of power installed each one.
