Development of Soil Organic Carbon Content in an 8-Year Old Miscanthus Crop Under Green and Brown Harvest Regime

Short Introductive summary

The aim of this research was to assess the development of the soil organic carbon content under a miscanthus crop 8 years after establishment on conventional arable soil. This research aims to contribute data to the carbon sequestration potential of converting arable land into perennial biomass crops like miscanthus. In this field trial the effect of two different harvest regimes, harvest of the green biomass in late October for anaerobic digestion (green harvest) and harvest of the dry biomass in March/April after winter for combustion (brown harvest), on the soil organic carbon were assessed. This contributes to the understanding to which extent the harvest time/regime affects soil carbon sequestration.
