How Biogas from Wastewater Treatment Plants (WTTPs) Can Be Used to Supply Local Energy Demand in Brazilian Municipalities

Short Introductive summary

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are essential to reduce the environmental impacts of incorrect disposal of sewage in water bodies, but they are energy-intensive facilities, which use various equipment to fulfill their purpose. However, they can turn into energy self-sufficient installations if the generated by-products are exploited, such as the biogas. In this sense, this research analyzed the electric energy demand of WWTPs, the possibilities of increasing energy efficiency and whether this energy demand could be met with the existing biogas generation potential from the municipalities of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
