Thermochemical Conversion Study of Olive Stones by Torrefaction and Hydrothemal Carbonization Processes

Short Introductive summary

Olive stone powder is an agricultural biomass, which can be valorized by different ways. It can be transformed into a value-added product and used in several industrial sectors for energy production. The thermal-conversion of this biomass into a high-carbon product can be achieved through different processes. In this work, torrefaction and hydrothermal carbonization processes have been evaluated in order to obtain a solid product with a high carbon content, which can be used for several applications (such as reducing agent in metallurgical furnaces, or as solid carbon fuel for energy production). The main conclusions of this work are: • The carbon content and HHV of the product in the samples increases when the temperature of the test increases, as expected. • Above 300°C, the HHV of the char (in particular that produced by hydrothermal carbonization) is almost equivalent to the HHV of commercial fossil coal (30 MJ/kg). • Using IR spectrometry by FTIR, the main functional groups observed on the chars studied are the carbonyl bonds of cellulose and hemicellulose and the aromatic rings present in lignin. Presenter's biography

Hary Demey is a research engineer, working at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). He has obtained his doctoral degree on chemical engineering processes at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) –Spain, in which he has obtained the CUM LAUDE honorific mention.
