Characteristics of Food Waste Anaerobic Digestion Sludge Biochar as a Bio-Solid Fuel: Comparative Study with Sewage Sludge.

Composting is the traditional method of disposing of food waste, but anaerobic digestion is gaining attention due to energy recovery from bio-gas. However, it generates sludge as a byproduct requiring proper treatment. In Korea, sewage sludge is co-fired in thermal power plants, and food waste is expected to follow. Sewage sludge has a high moisture and volatile content, adversely affecting the combustion process, so drying and devolatilization are necessary. Heavy metal content, acid gas generation, and NOx emissions due to high nitrogen content are concerns. Harmful substances can occur in food waste due to high salt content. Therefore, pyrolyzed food waste digestion sludge characteristics are analyzed to confirm its strengths and weaknesses as a bio-solid fuel and find alternatives.
