Advanced Technologies for Hydrogen Production in Brazilian Sugarcane Sector

Short Introductive summary

Brazilian sugarcane sector is a well-known established bioenergy sector in the country. More recently, second generation ethanol and biomethane production are increasing in several mills. In addition, hydrogen production are attracting attention of the entrepreneurs. The hydrogen produced from sugarcane sector, is also being considered as a significant option. Vinasse is a currently used both for irrigation and as fertilizer (the so-called fertigation). Considering the environmental impacts of such use other options for vinasse processing, such as biogas production, are being introduced by the mills. In this context, this paper will present the results already achieved in the hydrogen refueling station (from ethanol) and in the vinasse electrolyzer process by comparing the impacts of these processes with the current vinasse uses through LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology. The expected results will include both the LCA results for the different scenarios selected, including vinasse and filter cake digestion with biogas production and use of the biodigester effluents in fertigation, and the vinasse concentration stage (using the vinasse electrolytic concentrator developed).
