Biorefinery concepts and processes II

Biocatalytic Upgrading of Malic Acid for Sustainable Food Additive Production

Short Introductive summary

This study uses enzymatic catalysis to upgrade malic acid with 1-octanol, producing mono- and di-esters for use as emulsifiers, humectants, and in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Optimization via Design of Experiments achieved a 90% di-ester yield in 8 hours, with temperature² and catalyst amount² as key factors. The model showed strong predictive accuracy (R² = 0.814).
