Clean biomass-based syngas generation
Design and Development of a Pilot Unit for Purification of the Product Gas Obtained from Gasification of Municipal Solid Wastes
Short Introductive summary
Gasification of municipal solid wastes (MSW) has been considered a promising process to obtain valuable energy and fuels, contributing to valorising waste resources and minimising the negative environmental impact caused by fossil fuels. However, the high concentrations of contaminants in the product gas (e.g., particles, tars, metals, sulphur, and chlorine compounds) make it unsuitable for direct use in fuel synthesis processes, due to the tendency to create operational problems (corrosion of materials, formation of agglomerates, obstructions in equipment, ...) and emission of noxious pollutants to the atmosphere. Consequently, purification systems are essential to remove contaminants until satisfactory levels are reached. While past research has focused on individual purification technologies or partial integrations, no comprehensive pilot-scale system at TRL5 for MSW-derived syngas has been demonstrated so far. The present work aims to develop an integrated pilot unit to purify raw gas produced from MSW gasification, contributing to the intensification of MSW syngas purification systems at TRL5.
