New uses and better valorization of different biomass sources. Market transition towards a biobased future
Efficient Valorization of Oil Palm Residual Biomass In Colombia: Opportunities and Challenges for a Sustainable and Multifunctional Bioeconomy
Short Introductive summary
The increasing global demand for sustainable solutions has accelerated the development of bioeconomy models centered on the efficient use of biomass resources. In Colombia, a leading palm oil producer in Latin America, the agroindustry generates substantial volumes of residual biomass, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for sustainable resource management. This study explores the strategic valorization of oil palm biomass through integrated conversion pathways to produce food, bioenergy, biofuels, and biomaterials. By addressing the competition among biomass uses and the environmental risks of intensified production, the research highlights the need for a systemic, resource-efficient bioeconomy. It emphasizes the role of policy, innovation, and sustainable practices in enabling Colombia’s transition toward a multifunctional and climate-resilient bioeconomic model.
