Strategic Selection of Sugarcane Biomass Pre-Treatments for Centralized Biorefineries in Brazil: A Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Approach
Short Introductive summary
Sugarcane bagasse and straw, abundant by-products from Brazil’s ethanol industry, hold strategic potential to drive the nation’s decarbonization agenda through Biomass-to-Liquids (BtL) and Power-and-Biomass-to-Liquids (PBtL) routes for biomethanol production. This study integrates technical and operational data from two large scale ethanol and sugar plants with a Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy-AHP) framework to identify the most viable biomass pre-treatment strategies for centralized gasification hubs. By combining experimental results from GALP 94 project on energy performance and contaminant removal with expert-based decision modeling, the analysis provides a robust, data-driven ranking of seventeen pre-treatment alternatives. The results highlight torrefaction-based processes as the most balanced in terms of energy density, contaminant mitigation, and logistical feasibility. This integrated methodology establishes a decision-support approach for planning large-scale thermochemical biorefineries in Brazil, aligning technological innovation with energy efficiency and sustainable industrial integration goals
