Sustainable integrated agricultural management practices - Prospects of a sustainable production of biomass

Smart Biovoltaic System for Integrated Soil-Crop-Energy Management Strategies

Short Introductive summary

Within the global context of decarbonization and the European Green Deal goals for 2050, it investigates how agrivoltaic systems can optimize land use, energy and crop production, improve soil health, and enhance resource efficiency. The research focuses on monitoring environmental parameters such as soil composition, microclimate, and bioindicators to evaluate how different plant configurations (height, angle, and spacing) influence crop growth, energy output, and ecological resilience. By analyzing variations in water availability, soil nutrients, and microclimatic stability, the work aims to assess whether agrivoltaic systems can simultaneously sustain agricultural productivity and renewable energy performance. Preliminary results reveal that optimized agrivoltaic layouts maintain comparable energy yields to conventional photovoltaics while improving soil moisture by up to 15%, reducing irrigation needs, and enhancing crop resistance to heat stress. The study confirms that, when carefully designed and monitored, agrivoltaic systems can transform farmland into multifunctional platforms that support biomass production, water conservation, and carbon neutrality.
