Biomass integration
Decentralized Biomass-to-Energy Systems in the Amazon: Linking Techno-Economic Assessment and Carbon Credit Strategies for Sustainable Value Chains
Short Introductive summary
This study investigates the potential of decentralized biomass-to-energy systems as a sustainable pathway for the Amazonian bioeconomy. Focusing on residues from sawmills and managed forest concessions, it develops an integrated techno-economic and carbon credit assessment model to evaluate small- and medium-scale biochar production units. The framework combines CAPEX–OPEX analysis, energy balance modeling, and carbon monetization mechanisms to estimate indicators such as payback period, levelized cost of energy (LCOE), and net carbon balance. By aligning economic feasibility with environmental performance, the research supports community-based energy solutions and the transition from fossil-based to carbon-negative systems in the Amazon. The approach advances the design of transparent, traceable, and financially viable bioenergy value chains that contribute to Brazil’s decarbonization goals and emerging voluntary carbon markets.
