A Novel Acid-Based Ternary Natural Deep-Eutectic Solvent for a Lignin-First Biomass Pretreatment Strategy

Short Introductive summary

Eucalyptus is a relevant pulp and paper feedstock. Its fines are an underutilized lignocellulosic resource already available in the industrial facilities. This study uses a novel ternary NADES (choline chloride, acetic acid, glycolic acid) for selective lignin extraction (80% purity) from fines, achieving ~90% delignification. The holocellulose-rich residue (~80%) is promising for further valorization, supporting sustainable biorefinery development. This green, tunable fractionation highlights solvent design’s role in efficient lignin recovery and integrated biomass upgrading.

Presenter's biography

Principal Researcher at the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit of LNEG and a former Coordinator of the Biomass Deconstruction Programme. Her research interests lie in the development of pretreatment processes for the selective fractionation of different types of biomass (lignocellulosic and aquatic).
