Bio-based Carbon Dioxide Removal in Canada

Short Introductive summary

Bio-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies are gaining importance as part of global climate mitigation strategies. In Canada, these approaches intersect with forestry, agriculture, and the bioeconomy, offering opportunities for negative emissions and sustainable resource use. This work provides the first structured overview and methodology for characterising bio-based CDR pathways-such as BECCS, biochar, and long-lived bioproducts-through policy review, technology mapping, and stakeholder engagement. The study addresses a critical knowledge gap and lays the foundation for strategic planning, policy development, and future research to accelerate deployment.
