A New Prototype for Hemp Scutching at Farm Level
Short Introductive summary
The first version of this scutching machine was developed by a mechanical manufacturer in Umbria (Italy) who made it available for testing at its factory using hemp plants provided as part of the Carifit2022 project. The scientific innovation and relevance are sintetized: • Innovation: Several Italian farms already market their products directly. Completing the fibre production cycle in-house would represent a valid opportunity for their business. • Relevance: The possibility of combining the hemp cultivation with the availability of a scutching machine on the same farm allows for better definition of the intervention period, maximizing the desired aspects each time. In particular, it allows for different times and durations of maceration, which are beneficial for fibre quality. • Impact: The proposed approach could have a positive impact on producers’ income, since the in-house production of fibre reduces transport costs and allows timely intervention.
