Carbon accounting for the bioeconomy
Innovative Circular Solutions for Revalorization of Green CO2 and Methane Production: Towards a Sustainable Winery
Short Introductive summary
The wine industry generates significant volumes of biogenic CO2 during fermentation, most of which is typically released into the atmosphere. As part of the FUELPHORIA project, an integrated circular solution has been developed at Viñas del Vero winery to capture, purify, and revalorize this green CO2 through catalytic methanation using renewable hydrogen. The system includes a CO2 capture unit capable of processing emissions from 12 fermentation tanks, achieving purities above 99%, and an on-site photovoltaic-powered electrolyzer producing high-purity hydrogen for methanation. Laboratory studies demonstrated CO2 conversions above 99% and methane yields exceeding 97% using advanced Ni-based catalysts, enabling the production of grid-quality CH4. The approach offers a scalable model for carbon circularity in the agri-food sector, reducing emissions while generating renewable fuel. This work demonstrates the feasibility and industrial relevance of CO2-to-methane systems in wineries, paving the way for broader deployment across fermentation-based industries.
