Environmental Benefits of Timber and By-product Utilization Pathways for Larch in South Korea

Short Introductive summary

This study addresses the limited environmental value currently obtained from South Korea’s domestic timber supply chains, where roundwood is still used mainly for low-value applications. Focusing on larch (Larix kaempferi), it evaluates how alternative timber and by-product utilization pathways can improve carbon storage and substitution benefits. By comparing different lumber production scenarios and residue uses, the study shows that higher-value wood products and innovative by-product utilization can significantly enhance the contribution of domestic forest resources to sustainable forest management and the forest-based bioeconomy.
